Counseling for Couples

Most couples experience difficulties in their relationship from time-to-time.

Whether you jumped online to see if there is hope in the midst of a crisis or you are just feeling like things could be even better than they are, your relationship could benefit from couples counseling.

Focus Marital Therapy (FMT) is a therapeutic approach we use to engage couples at three stages of the relationship: premarital, enrichment, and crisis. Crisis counseling assists couples facing a range of issues which may arise over the course of a marriage:

  • Divorce

  • Problems with in-laws

  • Negative outside influences

  • Co-dependency

  • Domestic abuse

  • Co-parenting

Focus Marital Therapy (FMT)

FMT integrates elements of family, cognitive, experiential, and insight-oriented psychotherapies. At the root of this model is the establishment of emotional, physical, and environmental safety for the couple.

Emphasis on Emotion

This treatment emphasizes emotional experience and examination of emotion in its approach.

Couples in crisis often believe the root of their issues are specific incidents, words, or actions that happen within the context of their relationship. Examples include statements such as “if she would stop doing….I wouldn’t be so angry” or “if he would start….maybe I wouldn’t have to get on him all of the time.”

In this treatment, the focus is not on getting both people to agree on who is “right,” but to facilitate a better understanding of personal responsibility, the conflict cycle, boundaries, self-care, and effective communication.

Couples Counseling Formats

This therapeutic approach was developed by a team of therapists at the National Institute of Marriage, which is now Focus on the Family Hope Restored. The model is used in their marriage intensive program. Jennifer Krause is a certified marriage intensive therapist at Hope Restored, where she utilizes this approach with couples in the intensive format with both groups and individual couples.

Couples therapy includes weekly 90-120 minute sessions in our private practice. Longer sessions are available as well, please contact us to discuss these options.
