CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented form of treatment that uses a hands-on approach to problem-solving. It typically lasts for 12 to 18 sessions.
The goal of CBT is to reduce psychological distress and improve functioning by developing skills to change ways of thinking and behaving.
At its core, it is based on the idea that how we think (cognition), how we feel (emotion), and how we act (behaviors) are all connected and interact together. For example, if I think negatively, I will also feel and react negatively. Because these areas are all connected, focusing on changing one area will create positive change in all areas.
Prolonged Exposure Therapy
Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) is a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy developed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is one of the most researched and effective forms of treatment for PTSD.
PE teaches the skills that allow people to gradually approach trauma-related memories, feelings, and situations that they may have been avoiding since the trauma.
People with PTSD often try to avoid anything that reminds them of the trauma they experienced. Although this can be helpful in the short term, it is not helpful in the long term because avoiding distressing reminders of the trauma actually prevents recovery from PTSD.
During treatment with PE, people learn a breathing technique to control anxiety. Clients also learn to identify people, places, and activities that have been avoided since the trauma to gradually confront these situations over the course of therapy. PE also involves talking through the details of the trauma to help with feelings of anger, fear, and sadness .
Confronting these situations will aid in re-establishing a sense of safety and reduce the unwanted memories so it is no longer necessary to avoid those situations.
